– Organisms Uncover Hidden Redundancy to Survive Deadly Genetic Mutations –
A research team led by Director Masanori Hatakeyama of the Laboratory of Microbial Carcinogenesis at our institute and Associate Professor Naoko Kamiya of the Institute for Genetic Disease Control at Hokkaido University has uncovered a unique biological survival strategy. This mechanism is triggered only when a lethal mutation exists in a specific gene during early embryonic development, allowing the family genes to gain functional redundancy that protects the organism from embryonic lethality.
